Land Rover Defender SVX The Rugged SUV Spied Testing Near The Nurburgring

The Land Rover Defender is one of the most beloved off-road vehicles in history, and it has received a modern-day makeover that has managed to retain its classic design while bringing it into the 21st century. But Land Rover is not satisfied with simply having a new Defender – they want to make it even more rugged and powerful. That’s where the Land Rover Defender SVX comes in.

Recent spy shots have shown the new Defender SVX being tested on public roads near the Nürburgring, and they have gotten fans of the classic SUV excited for what’s to come. The Defender SVX is said to feature a BMW-sourced 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, which could make it one of the most powerful off-roaders on the market.

The Defender SVX is expected to feature a more aggressive front fascia than the standard model, with large openings in the corners of the grille that are likely designed to improve airflow to the engine. The SUV is also said to have extended fenders, which could give it a more muscular look while also providing more space for larger off-road tires.

At the back, circular exhaust pipes are visible beneath the bumper, giving the Defender SVX a sporty touch. It’s clear that Land Rover is trying to make the SVX stand out from the standard Defender, and these design elements are a step in the right direction.

While we don’t yet know exactly when the Defender SVX will make its debut, the fact that it is being tested on public roads means that it is likely not too far off. The V8-powered Defender models are already pricey, with the Defender 90 V8 starting at $98,550 and the 110 going for $101,750, so we can expect the SVX to come with an even higher price tag.

But for off-road enthusiasts who want the ultimate Defender, the SVX is likely to be worth the extra cost. With a powerful engine, aggressive styling, and all the off-road capabilities that the Defender is known for, the SVX is set to be one of the most exciting SUVs of the year. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Upcoming Land Rover Defender SVX Spotted

Although Land Rover has now firmly established their revived Defender lineup to include the Defender 90, 110, and 130 models, the company isn’t one to rest on their laurels. Recent spy shots have been unearthed of a new Defender that will serve as the high-performance variant. This is currently, tentatively, referred to as the Defender SVX or Defender SR, and here’s what we know about this new Defender so far from these photos.

As the performance version of the Defender, it’s believed that this new SVX will be powered by a BMW V8 motor, likely the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged motor found in BMW’s X5 and X6 M Competition SUVs. In this trim, the motor put out 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque for BMW, which should provide a good ballpark estimate of the output of this upcoming SVX. A frequent comment when the new Defenders were rolled out was that they were just a little under-powered for the size of the vehicle, so these new V8s should prove to be the fix for anyone who was bothered by the original engine choices. With this much power on tap, the SVX is sure to deliver an exhilarating driving experience both on and off the road.

Cosmetically, the SVX mule keeps most of the current “Defender” styling, including the headlights, safari-style windows, and full-size spare tire mounted to the tailgate of the four-door body. The test mule here is based on a Defender 110 size platform. While this mule sports camo, we can see some mild changes to the body panels intended to give this SUV a sportier look to complement its performance. Most notably, we can see a larger grille opening for a more aggressive look, as well as a skid plate which pairs well with the All Terrain tires; the increased airflow up front is likely intended to facilitate airflow over the intercoolers for the turbochargers and improve cooling. Also, a sporty dual exhaust system exits on the passenger side and provides another visual cue to the high-performance V8 that will be lurking under the hood when it hits dealer lots. Through the camouflage, you can also make out some wider, sportier fender flares than those on the standard 90, 110, and 130 models.

With all of that said, this test mule looks close to production, and it seems reasonable to expect an official announcement of the SVX (or whatever name Land Rover finally lands on for this car) later on in 2023. This performance variant of the Defender will likely see a sticker price of over $100,000, and it seems like Land Rover isn’t going to stop here. Also rumored to be in development is a pickup version of the Defender (sure to give the Jeep Gladiator a run for its money), as well as what appears to be a more street-focused SVX based on the smaller Defender 90 chassis, complete with a wide body kit. As the Defender lineup grows in size, we’re also sure to see an increase in OEM or dealership options for each model to truly make this a one-size-fits-all adventure SUV, and this new V8-powered Defender SVX is looking to be just the ticket for those who feel the need for speed both off the pavement and on it.

2023 Land Rover Defender 130 Recalled Over Safety Risk, Manufacturing Issue at Fault

The roomiest Defender currently in production has been called back to the tune of 812 examples produced to U.S. specifications. According to documents filed with the federal watchdog, a supplier produced third-row seats that don’t latch properly due to a manufacturing issue.

Jaguar Land Rover became aware of this problem in October 2022. The supplier in question, a Hungary-based company dubbed TS Tech KFT, contacted the British automaker to address their concern with the aforementioned condition. The Product Safety and Compliance Committee within Jaguar Land Rover started investigating a month later, with the PSCC also requesting containment of newly produced Defenders.

Vehicles in which the latch operation was found to be outside of specification would be held by JLR and retailers, pending further instruction. The Product Safety and Compliance Committee further tasked the Supplier Technical Assistance organization to define the scope of this problem, after which the concern was progressed to the Recall Determination Committee for the final call.

In late February 2022, the safety boffins at Jaguar Land Rover concluded that it’s a safety risk that needs to be remedied before delivering the subject vehicles to customers. No accidents or injuries have been reported thus far, and JLR isn’t aware of warranty claims either.

The third-row seat base, identified under part number N8B2-613A10-AF, may have been manufactured with a suspect component that makes the seat back not latch properly. Due to the latch not operating as intended, the seat back strength is compromised. In the event of a frontal crash, a child seat occupant is exposed to an increased risk of injury as per the attached recall report.

As highlighted earlier, 812 vehicles produced for the U.S. and its federalized territories are called back. The report for campaign 23V-137 lists build dates ranging between July 11th, 2022 and October 6th, 2022 for the affected 2023 model year Defender 130 luxury SUVs.

Owners can expect Land Rover-branded envelopes from Jaguar Land Rover North America to arrive by first-class mail no later than April 28th. Dealers will be informed on March 16th to inspect affected vehicles and check the third-row seat back latch. No further action is required if the latch works as intended, but otherwise, the seat frame and other components will be replaced by the retailer.

Slightly longer than the Defender 110 despite featuring similar wheelbases, the Defender 130 is rocking a 2+3+3 seating layout. Designed primarily for the U.S. market where large SUVs are in high demand, the family-oriented variant starts at $68,000 sans freight charge.

The Defender S entry-level specification comes with a 3.0L P300 inline-six turbo engine that cranks out 296 horsepower and enough torque for the Defender 130 to reach 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in 7.5 seconds. At the other end of the spectrum, the Defender X belts out 395 horsepower from a mild-hybrid sixer.

New Bowler 100th Edition Defender 90 Is a Bespoke Overlander That Costs a Lot of Money

To certain off-roading enthusiasts, the new-gen Land Rover Defender doesn’t exist. And it is them who are being targeted by Bowler, among other companies, with all sorts of overlanding conversions based on the previous iterations of the iconic off-roader.

The latest is called the 100th Edition, and it is a celebratory model that salutes Bowler’s 100th build of the Defender 90 Road Car Conversion. A bespoke creation, it builds on the 90 Hard Top variant, just like the original Defender Challenge vehicles, and it is also a tribute to its heritage.

Bowler describes it as “a must-have for any collector or Defender enthusiast,’ stating that it features some exclusive touches all around. It has additional stuff inside and out, and some upgrades beneath the skin, all of which are meant to further emphasize its special nature, while also making it more potent on arduous tracks.

Bowler’s new 100th Edition Defender 90 sports new bumpers, sills, rear steps, and steering guard in Corris Gray, signature headlamp surrounds, rollover protection, spare wheel mounted internally, stainless steel fixings, half bulk-head delete, an exclusive graphics package, and logos. It rides on 18-inch lightweight alloys that were wrapped in 285/60 BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires. Turning night into day at the push of a button are the extra lights mounted up front.

Land Rover’s in-house 4×4 specialists say that they gave it additional soundproofing on the inside, for a quieter and more relaxed drive. The overlander has leather on the upper parts of the dashboard, MOMO steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara, and a new gearshift lever. The OEM front seats were replaced by the Recaro SVX 60th Anniversary ones, the headliner is bedecked by Alcantara, and there is a new Alpine infotainment system on deck, complete with a reversing camera.

In addition to these upgrades, Bowler has also taken care of other aspects of their exclusive Defender 90 100th Edition. Here, they mention the new suspension, and a Stage 2 engine upgrade, complete with an intercooler, for more power. The potent 4×4 also comes with a performance exhaust system with mudflap kit, uprated brakes, and it has smoked side lights and repeaters, and LED headlamps to further set it apart from the regular versions of the three-door truck.

The 100th Edition Defender 90 is up for grabs at Bowler, and the off-roading specialist is asking £78,000 (equal to $92,290) for it in the United Kingdom, excluding tax. By comparison, a brand-new Defender 90 Hard Top can be yours from £51,365 ($60,775) locally, and the more practical Defender 110 Hard Top starts at £57,290 ($67,785). For the normal Defender 90, 110, and 130, you are looking at a minimum of £61,940 ($73,285), £64,035 ($75,765), and £75,620 ($89,475) respectively.

The 2024 Land Rover SVX

The 2024 land Rover SVX was a concept vehicle first introduced in 2017 and has undergone several revisions since then. The second Defender generation debuted in 2020 includes the Land Rover SVX.

A strong competitor for the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Ford Bronco Raptor in 2024 is the Land Rover Defender SVX. The Defender SVX will add more luxury than its main competitors; however, its off-road prowess is splendid. This vehicle is said to be released early in 2024.

Features

The SVX is likely a more expensive option, with a vast list of standard features. The standard features will include conveniences like an 11.4-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, wireless device charging, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, HD Radio, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, and proximity keyless entry.

The list of standard features may also include conveniences like a center console refrigerator, tri-zone automatic climate control, cabin air ionization, an Activity Key, a household-style power outlet, ambient interior lighting, a 10-speaker Meridian stereo, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 14-speaker Meridian surround-sound stereo.

Forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, surround-view cameras, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and rain-sensing wipers are all examples of safety features that are unquestionably included as standard equipment.

In addition, features like automatic highlighting, an aftermarket rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control may be present.

Exterior

The new Land Rover Defender SVX is disguised, concealing most of its details. According to additional fascia coverings, the model may have updated air dams and bumpers, and the quad-tip exhaust pipes at the back will have a sharper look.

The ride height has been raised and is adjustable. The side profile now includes off-road spec wheels covered in BF Goodrich trail terrain tires.

The well-known Defender V8’s quad exhaust outlets protrude from the back bumper, although speculation abounds as to whose V8 will be housed under the SVX’s bonnet.

This wheel and tire package include a custom set of 20-inch alloy wheels and four 265/60-profile BF Goodrich Trail-Terrain A/T tires.

Several colors are offered, including Fuji White, Carpathian Grey Premium Metallic, Eiger Grey Metallic, Gondwana Stone Metallic, Hakuba Silver Metallic, Pangea Green Metallic, Santorini Black Metallic, Silicon Silver Premium Metallic, Tasman Blue Metallic, and Yulong White Metallic Body.

Interior

Land Rover vehicles are chief in luxury and high-end interiors, and the SVX is not left out because it features premium materials and developed technology. It contains controls to help lower your car, a window at the top of the vehicle, etc. If reports are believed, the 90 models with a short wheelbase won’t be able to purchase the new version.

This indicates that all versions will have enough passenger room and four doors. Adult passengers may easily fit in both rows of this spacious cabin, which also has a sizable baggage area.

The cabin also has a chic appearance. It is rough, yet that ruggedness is complemented by some tasteful design choices and lovely materials that feel solid and lasting.

Everything feels even more premium thanks to the generous offering of innovation and convenience features. The elevated driving position provides superb sightlines from every angle.

Engine Power and Performance

The SVX variant of the ordinary Defender will be a more aggressive model. This Defender’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine has the same four exhaust tips as the standard Defender.

The truck has a more powerful powerplant, a 5.0-liter V8 engine, under its hood. The SVX is expected to have a powerful engine with off-road capability and advanced technologies that enhance its performance in different landscapes.

It has more power and torque than other mid-size pickups like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado, producing roughly 518 horsepower and 461 lb-ft. These vehicles have a V6 engine. The gas mileage is excellent. A 4.9-second sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) and a top speed of 233 km/h (145 mph) are predicted for this most recent Defender model. This new SVX model may end up competing with the G500 442, with which AMG’s popular G63 SUV currently competes. There is much to love about the on- and off-road power of the Rover SVX.

Body Kit

The biggest difference is a pair of 20-inch gloss black wheels covered with substantial BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A tires.

Skid plates, expanded fender flares, and a four-tailpipe exhaust system connects them.

The standard model is impressive because it has an air suspension that offers up to 11.5 inches (292 mm) of ground clearance.

Pricing

Though expensive, this model is much cheaper than the other trims, starting at around $50,000.

PROS and CONS

PROS

  • Advanced off-road capabilities: The SVX is designed to be a high-performance off-road vehicle with features such as a raised suspension, skid plates, and all-terrain tires, making it an excellent choice for off-road enthusiasts.
  • Powerful engine: Land Rover is known for producing powerful engines, and the SVX is likely to follow suit. The SVX is nothing less, having a powerful engine that can deliver exceptional performance on different terrains.
  • The SVX doesn’t cut down on beauty; the cool look will draw attention.
  • A spacious and luxurious interior is a bonus.

CONS

  • The pricing of the 2024 Land Rover Defender truck is its biggest challenge. The cost of the SVX is high.
  • To make it more accessible to customers, the manufacturer should create a lighter version because it is fairly hefty.

Conclusion

The SVX will likely arrive in the first half of the year 2024 and will deliver a premium driving experience. It will not fall short of Land Rovers’ comfort power and premium standard. With the hidden look, Land Rover Range Rover is set to deliver a premium experience for drivers.
