The New Land Rover Defender Hard Top brings unstoppable capability, usability and toughness to the commercial 4×4 sector alongside 21st century connectivity and premium comfort. The Hard Top name has been associated with rugged practicality and go-anywhere carrying capacity since the first Land Rover Hard Tops were introduced 70 years ago.

Available in both 90 Hard Top and 110 Hard Top body designs, the durable interior of the new commercial model combines a two-seat passenger compartment – with the option of a third central jump seat – and a flexible, hard-wearing rear load bay that provides 1,355 and 2,059 litres of loadspace respectively.

By incorporating clever lockable underfloor storage solutions and a secure bulkhead partition, the experts at Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations have taken every step to maximise the space and practicality of the Defender in its transformation into the most usable and hard-wearing commercial Land Rover ever produced

The Defender Hard Top is powered exclusively by Land Rover’s strong and efficient Ingenium diesel engines, including D200, D250 and D300 in-line six-cylinder variants (certain EU5 markets offer in-line four-cylinder D200 for Defender 90 and D240 for Defender 110). All make use of the latest advanced Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) system to distribute power and torque for optimum performance and efficiency.

Land Rover Defenders have always thrived in the harshest environments. Whether for commercial or recreational use, the Defender Hard Top is a true no-nonsense vehicle that will take whatever is thrown at it, or in it

DURABLE AND FLEXIBLE LOAD AREA

All Defender Hard Top models come with a practical cargo area with a fixed full-height partition to separate occupants from the generous load area. The bulkhead boosts security and safety and preserves the refined driving experience of the passenger model. The partition itself comes with four hanging hooks on the loadspace side, and two stowage nets on the cabin side of 110 models for small items.

The full-width load floor is completely flat, with up to six integrated lashing points, heavy-duty rubber mats and a set of lockable storage areas providing with 58 litres of underfloor stowage at the rear of both the 90 and 110. An additional underfloor area is fitted to the 110 Hard Top, where the footwells of the Defender passenger model would normally be found, providing 155 litres of hidden stowage, and the whole load area is illuminated by enhanced interior lighting five times brighter than the standard passenger Defender.

Additionally, high-sided rubber mats for the front footwells add to the rugged nature of the passenger compartment – and when the time comes to clean the interior out, the all-rubber floor coverings can be hosed down.

The Hard Top’s load area is accessed via the side-hinged rear tailgate, while the rear side doors on 110 variants boost practicality and give customers the flexibility to access smaller items located towards the front without the need to move bulky objects out of the way. The interior rear door panels also feature a unique slimline profile to maximise loadspace inside. If required, the 110 Hard Top can accommodate a standard Euro Pallet thanks to its wide-opening tailgate and generous proportions. The maximum load length measures up to 1,472mm in the 110 and lashing points ensure large loads can be safely secured in place.

Customers can add bespoke signage to the Defender Hard Top’s iconic silhouette, thanks to the Exterior Signage Panel behind the front row of seats that runs to the rear of the vehicle, while a variety of roof racks and accessories provide added scope for load carrying.

UNRIVALLED CAPABILITY

Defender Hard Top provides exceptional off-road capability in tandem with strong load carrying capacity – giving commercial vehicle customers the ability to reach the most remote locations.

Both 90 and 110 Hard Top models are equipped with independent coil-sprung suspension, with advanced Electronic Air Suspension available on the 110. Both set-ups provide outstanding off-road geometry, with ground clearance of 291mm, and approach, breakover and departure angles as the passenger models – up to 38, 28 and 40 degrees respectively for the 110 (in Off-Road Height).

The Hard Top also demonstrates impressive towing prowess, with the ability to pull up to 3,500kg, and it will wade through water up to 900mm deep, assisted by the Wade programmed in the Terrain Response 2 system that ensures drivers can cross flooded roads or tracks with confidence.

Land Rover’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system is instrumental in enabling customers to go anywhere. The new intelligent driveline system uses sensor data from driver inputs and vehicle surroundings to continually vary axle torque and deliver it to where it’s needed. This torque distribution arrangement optimises the vehicle not only for traction and on-road dynamics, but it also contributes to driveline efficiency with lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy, without sacrificing any of the Defender’s unrivalled off-road capability.

EFFICIENT AND POWERFUL INGENIUM DIESEL ENGINES

Power for the Defender Hard Top comes from a choice of advanced Ingenium diesel engines mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with twin-speed transfer box.

The Defender 90 Hard Top features the D200 in-line six-cylinder engine producing 200PS and 500Nm of torque (D200 in-line four-cylinder with 200PS and 430Nm in select EU5 markets).

The Defender 110 Hard Top is available with the D250 or D300 in-line six-cylinder diesel engines,  featuring MHEV technology and the option of Electronic Air Suspension. The D250 delivers 249PS and 570Nm of torque, while the D300 provides 300PS and 650Nm (D240 in-line four-cylinder with 240PS and 430Nm in select EU5 markets).

The smooth and strong torque delivery offered by the six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engines is perfect for the Defender Hard Top, while also delivering superior fuel economy and reduced emissions from the Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system.

The RDE2-certified and Euro 6d-Final compliant six-cylinder engines meet the most stringent global emissions standards and feature state-of-the-art Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology to enhance refinement, efficiency and responses.

The 48-volt system harvests energy usually lost when slowing down and stores it in a battery under the rear floor of the vehicle. This energy is then redeployed to provide torque assistance during stop/start driving, providing smoother and more economical driving.

DEFENDER HARD TOP SPECIFICATION

The rugged Defender 90 Hard Top comes exclusively in Defender specification with durable Ebony fabric seats ensuring it’s up to the challenges and rigours of everyday use, and rubber flooring throughout.

Defender 110 Hard Top customers can choose from four specifications: Defender, S, SE and HSE. These provide a range of exterior and interior enhancements and wheel choices, including Taurus upholstery on SE and Windsor Leather seats on HSE, all offering a unique blend of comfort and durability.

Land Rover’s state-of-the-art Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment provides immediate and intuitive control of all the major vehicle functions, including seamless smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Twin eSIM technology underpins Pivi Pro and supports Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) capability, allowing customers to download updates for a variety of vehicle systems. For professionals using the Defender Hard Top for business, this will minimise time spent off the road as SOTA updates can be completed without the need to visit a Land Rover retailer.

All New Defender Hard Top models feature a comprehensive set of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. This includes Land Rover’s 3D Surround Camera system that provides all-round visualisation of the vehicle on the central touchscreen, helping drivers manoeuvre safely in tight spaces or position the vehicle close to items ready for loading.

For an uncompromised view out of the rear of the vehicle – regardless of whether the load space is full or if there’s a passenger in the optional Jump Seat – Land Rover’s ClearSight Rear View camera provides an uninterrupted view out the rear of the vehicle at the flick of a switch on the bottom of the rear-view mirror.

Convenience is enhanced further with the Remote smartphone app, which will allow businesses to keep track of the location, fuel level and journey history of their vehicle from afar, for ultimate peace of mind and security.

The 90 Hard Top is available from  £35,820 OTR (exc. VAT) and the Defender 110 Hard Top from £43,012 OTR (exc. VAT) in the UK.

Driven by a passion and respect for the original, New Defender delivers transformational breadth of capability, using advanced all-terrain technologies to redefine adventure for the 21st century, while remaining true to the pioneering spirit that has been a Land Rover hallmark for more than 70 years.

For 2021 Model Year an advanced new Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) model – the P400e – is key to Defender’s expanded appeal. Combining a powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and 105kW electric motor, the 404PS P400e delivers substantial torque alongside low running costs, with CO2 emissions of just 74g/km and combined economy of 85.3mpg (3.3l/100km). It will run in all-electric mode with zero tailpipe emissions for up to 27 miles (43km), including off-road where the immediate torque from the electric motor makes Defender even more capable.

Alongside the new P400e, Land Rover’s powerful and efficient in-line six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine joins the range. Strong performance, smooth responses and refinement combine to deliver another Defender that’s a world-class all-rounder on-road and an unrivalled expert off-road.

New X-Dynamic specification is available on both Defender 90 and 110, offering a selection of exterior and interior design elements which reflect the 4×4’s immense capability and ensures it stands out from the crowd.

The range of options for personalising Defender has grown too, with new colours including Yulong White, Silicon Silver and Carpathian Grey available in combination with a choice of contrast roof finishes. A selection of individual options are also now available for the first time, including the Folding Fabric Roof for Defender 110 and the choice of a Suspension Pack on Defender 90 while Premium LED headlights, Meridian Sound System, Head-Up Display and Front Fog Lights can all be added individually.

The Land Rover Defender’s capabilities continue to evolve with a range of powertrain and design enhancements. Defender customers have more choice than ever with a full selection of exterior and interior colours and trims, including the distinctive new X-Dynamic model and choice of 90 and 110 body designs.

DEFENDER P400E PLUG-IN HYBRID

The new P400e Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) variant is key to the Defender’s latest enhancements. Available with the 110 body design, it delivers a blend of performance and economy while also being the most capable and durable electrified Land Rover. With unrivalled capability and off-road geometry for a full-sized plug-in hybrid electric 4×4, the P400e is capable of being driven in low range purely in EV mode, bringing a new dimension to adventures in the wild.

Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 300PS and a 105kW electric motor powered by a 19.2kWh battery, the P400e provides a combined output of 404PS from its advanced PHEV powertrain, delivering refined performance and responses, but with an all-electric range of 27 miles (43km).

The Defender P400e produces as little as 74g/km of CO2 and is capable of up to 85.3mpg (3.3l/100km). Alongside impressive fuel economy and emissions figures, the Defender P400e has a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds) and will reach a top speed of 130mph (209km/h).

The advanced new P400e Plug-In Hybrid perfectly balances performance with fuel economy and all-electric off-road capability. The latest model also provides refined and powerful new in-line six-cylinder diesel engines that bring improvements in fuel economy and drivability. They join a comprehensive range of powertrain options for Defender

IAIN GRAY
SENIOR MANAGER, POWERTRAIN ADVANCED ENGINEERING, JAGUAR LAND ROVER

Standard on all Defender P400e models are 20-inch alloy wheels, Electronic Air Suspension and a charging port located on the left-hand side of the vehicle. All PHEV variants come with a Mode 3 charging cable as standard, while an optional Mode 2 cable is also available. The Mode 3 charging cable enables charging to 80 per cent in two hours, while charging via a Mode 2 cable will take around seven hours to charge to 80 per cent – perfect for home charging overnight. Using a 50kW rapid charger, the P400e charges to 80 per cent capacity in 30 minutes.

The Defender P400e is available with the option of five or six seats, standard three-zone climate control, Privacy Glass and Solar Attenuating Glass. Specific to the PHEV variant is regenerative braking, a key technological component in achieving impressive fuel economy, recuperating energy lost under deceleration and braking and sending it back into the battery pack.

The PHEV powertrain brings superior off-road capabilities too. The linear torque delivery enabled by the electric motor and smooth, powerful petrol engine combine for ultimate flexibility, working seamlessly with the advanced systems that make Defender the toughest and most durable Land Rover.

Defender offers high and low range off-road capabilities in full electric mode, alongside delivering superior off-road geometry for a plug-in hybrid vehicle, ensuring Defender’s immense capability is shared across all engine and powertrain options.

These characteristics are also key to the Defender’s ability to tow – the P400e can tow up to 3,000kg, and is capable of carrying a roof load of 168kg (dynamic) or 300kg (static).

NEW INGENIUM IN-LINE SIX-CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE AND INTELLIGENT ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

A new in-line six-cylinder diesel option from the Ingenium engine family is now available, offering enhanced torque delivery, smooth responses and improved fuel economy thanks to its Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology and a new Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system.

Sitting at the top of the range, the D300 delivers enhanced power and torque, with 300PS and 650Nm of torque, providing a 0-60mph time of 6.3 seconds (0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds) for the Defender 90. The higher torque figure means the Defender D300 provides effortless performance both on and off-road, perfectly fitting Defender’s tough character.

The MHEV technology contributes to enhanced fuel economy through an efficient Stop/Start system which cuts the engine at a standstill, as well as recuperating energy normally lost under braking or decelerating. This energy is then sent back into the battery pack and can be redeployed later. A key benefit of MHEV is that this energy is used when accelerating, delivering faster responses for greater performance.

The new intelligent driveline system continually varies axle torque based on sensor data from the vehicle’s surroundings and driver inputs to distribute all torque to one axle or the other as required. This intelligent torque distribution system optimises the driveline for traction, on-road dynamics and driveline efficiency, resulting in improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions – all without sacrificing any of Defender’s inherent off-road capability.

In combination with MHEV technology and the superior refinement of the in-line six-cylinder engine, the diesel Defenders are more economical, more responsive and more refined than the engines they supercede.

The D200 and D240 become D200 and D250 models for 2021*, using the same in-line six-cylinder Ingenium engine as the D300 with 200PS and 249PS respectively. An uplift in torque delivers enhanced usability, with 500Nm (D200) and 570Nm (D250) available, utilising MHEV technology to boost fuel efficiency and reduce emissions across the diesel Defender line-up.

The new Ingenium D200 and D250 return 32.2mpg (8.8l/100km), and CO2 emissions as low as 230g/km, and 0-60mph in 9.5 seconds (0-100km/h in 10.2 seconds) and 7.9 seconds (0-100km/h in 8.3 seconds) respectively on Defender 110.

DEFENDER X-DYNAMIC

New X-Dynamic trim expands the choice of specifications in the Defender range. The X-Dynamic’s name gives a clue to its identity. Like all Defender models, it’s supremely capable and tough, but with a suite of enhancements to deliver a tougher look and feel, courtesy of exterior accents, including Silicon Satin front and rear skid pans, with matching grille bar and badging plus Rear Recovery Loops in Satin Black. All alloy wheels come in Satin Dark Grey/Gloss Black finish, alongside Narvik Black mirror caps, window decals and lower sill and wheel arch cladding.

Inside, unique elements include illuminated metal treadplates and Robustec seat material in Duotone colour finish with Robustec ribbon accent and Console Finishers.

Robustec is a highly robust and protective material inspired by textiles used in extreme outdoor situations. It’s hard-wearing and resistant to abrasions, with a hexagonal pattern and unique texture that adds greater depth to the Defender’s interior. Inspired by workman’s gloves and patches on motorbike jackets, it follows Defender’s theme of being entirely fit for purpose with carefully thought-out materials that are attractive but entirely suitable, robust and hard-wearing.

The Robustec material is standard on all X-Dynamic models in a range of colourways dependent on the specification pack. Defender X-Dynamic S and SE models feature Duotone Grained Leather with Robustec accent, while the X-Dynamic HSE features Duotone Windsor Leather with Robustec accent. All come in a choice of Ebony, Khaki, Ebony and Acorn, or Lunar seat colours.

X-Dynamic interior badging and centre console finishers also distinguish the new addition, alongside the Light Grey Cross-Car Beam Powder Coat, Ebony Morzine headlining and Eiger Grey satin door handles.

GREATER PERSONALISATION WITH NEW COLOURS AND OPTIONS

Individual options and packs have changed across the Defender line-up, including a broader selection of exterior colour options, making the Defender more customisable than ever.

The new colours are Yulong White,  Silicon Silver, Hakuba Silver and Carpathian Grey, with white or black Contrast Roofs available with all colours.

Individual options now available to expand the Defender’s existing specification include the 3D Surround Camera, Folding Fabric Roof for Defender 110, Premium LED headlights with Signature DRL, Meridian Sound System, Head-Up Display and Front Fog Lights.

Expanding the number of bundled option packs, Defender can now be specified with a Blind Spot Assist Pack, and a choice of a Family Pack or Family Comfort Pack. The Family Pack adds third-row seating with three-zone climate with rear cooler and Cabin Air Ionisation, while the Family Comfort Pack brings heated seats.

DEFENDER 90

Alongside the Defender 110, the Defender 90 gives customers even more scope to choose the perfect model. Powered by the same range of powerful and capable petrol and diesel Ingenium engines featuring Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology, the Defender 90 is available with up to six seats when fitted with the jump seat in the front row.

Petrol Defender options include the powerful P300 and P400 with MHEV technology, alongside the new in-line six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine in D200, D250 and D300 power outputs. Like the 110, all Defender 90 models use a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox, with permanent all-wheel drive on petrol variants and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive on the new diesel versions. Configurable Terrain Response and the same impressive approach and departure angles as the 110 ensure customary Defender capability. With its superior breakover geometry when fitted with Electronic Air Suspension, and finely balanced and responsive on-road dynamics, the 90 is the most capable Defender ever made.

Inside, the 90 features the same practical interior design as the 110, with a range of models to choose from across Defender, X-Dynamic, First Edition and X models, as well as S, SE and HSE packs. All deliver a unique take on the Defender identity, giving customers a broad choice of interior colours and specifications that perfectly complement the suite of technologies available. With space for up to six, the driver and passengers all benefit from the spacious interior, despite an overall length that’s shorter than a compact family hatchback. The Defender 90 also provides a tight a turning circle of 11.3m for excellent manouevrability.

Defender 90 is also available with a choice of four Accessory Packs: Adventure, Country, Explorer and Urban – giving customers the ability to take their Defender anywhere they want, with the equipment to get there with ease.

DEFENDER HARD TOP: THE HARDWORKING DEFENDER

Developed by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, Defender Hard Top is the contemporary reimagining of a Land Rover legend. Offering customers a commercial vehicle in both 90 and 110 body designs, it combines Defender capability with a vast and flexible load area for ultimate practicality and durability – the toughest and most rugged member of the Defender family.

The Hard Top provides a compelling mix of off-road ability, practicality and cargo space, with an impressive payload of up to 800kg on the 110 Hard Top and a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg with a flexible interior layout. The load area is full of clever storage solutions so users can maximise the space on offer. All Defender Hard Tops feature a fixed-height load partition with hooks, lashing points to the load floor, lockable underfloor storage, heavy duty rubber loadspace mats and brighter loadspace illumination, as well as an exterior utility panel that’s perfect for individual customer signage.

For EU5 markets, four-cylinder D200 and D240 units are available. A range of specification packs are available for 110 Hard Top models, closely reflecting those in the core Defender range with S, SE and HSE each providing a unique combination of ruggedness, comfort and convenience.

A choice of suspension options is also available, with passive coil suspension standard on both 90 and 110 Hard Top models,  and advanced Electronic Air Suspension available for 110 Hard Top.

Land Rover has confirmed the new commercial Defender 90 and 110 models will restore the Hard Top name to its rugged 4×4 family.

The versatile and durable Defender Hard Top will be launched later this year, combining unstoppable all-terrain capability with 21st-century connectivity to give professionals a unique combination of cargo space, practicality and premium comfort.

The Hard Top name dates back to 1950, when the introduction of demountable Hard Tops gave early Series Land Rovers added security and protection from the elements. New Defender Hard Top continues this ethos, sharing its fixed metal roof and silhouette with the iconic original.

Land Rover has experienced unprecedented global demand for New Defender 90 and 110 since its successful world premiere last September and the new Hard Top models will be the next additions to the legendary bloodline.

Defender’s aluminium-intensive D7x body architecture is three times stiffer than the best body-on-frame designs. NICK COLLINS
LAND ROVER VEHICLE LINE DIRECTOR

An impressive payload and towing capacity of up 3,500kg* will combine to make New Defender the ultimate commercial 4×4. The flexible cabin has no second or third-row seats, but the optional front-row jump seat means it will still accommodate up to three people. Land Rover’s clever ClearSight Rear View mirror system preserves rearward visibility when the jump seat is occupied, or when the load space is full. It uses a live video feed from a rear-facing camera to give drivers an unobstructed view at all times.

New Defender Hard Top will be a world-class tow vehicle, with a raft of technologies to help hitch, drive and reverse safely while pulling a trailer. Land Rover’s intelligent Advanced Tow Assist system takes the stress out of difficult reversing maneuvers by letting drivers steer trailers with their fingertips using a rotary controller on the center console.

The maximum wading depth of 900mm is also supported by a new Wade programme in the Terrain Response 2 system, which ensures drivers can ford deep water with complete confidence – so important supplies will always get through.

Land Rover’s state-of-the-art Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment will provide immediate and intuitive control of all the major vehicle functions, including seamless smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In addition, the New Defender Hard Top models will feature a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Land Rover’s 3D Surround Camera system provides an all-round visualisation of the vehicle on the central touchscreen, helping drivers manoeuvre safely in tight spaces or position the vehicle close to items ready for loading.

Land Rover has teamed up with specialist Autohome to develop a bespoke roof tent for the New Land Rover Defender 110. The rugged, easy-to-operate design allows customers to enjoy short overnight camping trips or lengthy overland expeditions in complete comfort.

New Defender is the most capable and connected Land Rover to date, with a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs providing excellent off-road geometry and software-over-the-air technology ensuring customers benefit from the latest updates, wherever they pitch camp in the world.

As tough and capable as the vehicle it was created for, the Defender roof tent features an intuitive design and premium quality materials that have been proven in the harshest climates.

A lightweight fibreglass shell protects the tent when not in use and allows it to be erected singlehandedly in seconds. Simply unclip the fastening at the rear and lift the shell slightly for the integral gas struts to take over and fully open the carbon grey fabric sides.

Designed for those with adventurous hearts and curious minds, the tent sleeps two adults on a full-size luxury cotton mattress and comes with pillows, an interior LED light and a stowage net. The tent can be easily accessed from either side of the vehicle and comes with an extendable aluminium access ladder which can be stored in the stowage bag inside the tent when not in use.

On the move, the tent is stowed flat for maximum stability and aerodynamic efficiency. When erected, it measures 2.3m long, 1.3m wide and 1.5m high.

The roof tent is available to purchase from Land Rover retailers or the Autohome website, priced at €3,081.96 RRP excluding VAT.

The New Land Rover Defender is the ideal vehicle to reach remote destinations comfortably both on and off road. This roof tent will enable Defender drivers to continue their adventure above and beyond their journey; it’s perfect for the modern-day explorer.

This unprecedented global health emergency requires us all to pull together. As part of the British Red Cross response to coronavirus, we’re delving deep into the heart of communities across the UK to help strengthen support for the most vulnerable people through delivering essential food parcels and medicines to those unable to get out.

SIMON LEWIS
HEAD OF CRISIS RESPONSE, BRITISH RED CROSS

We have been overwhelmed by the kindness shown across the country, not only by our increasing number of volunteers, but also our longstanding partners. Thanks to Land Rover’s generous support, our Emergency Response teams in the UK will be to reach even more people living in isolated communities than we could alone.

Land Rover and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have worked together for over 65 years, helping communities prepare and respond to emergencies with disaster-preparedness projects around the world – vital at times like this.

Through its partnership with the British Red Cross, Land Rover has also helped fund emergency relief efforts through the Disaster Relief Alliance, which supports community resilience programmes in the UK and around the world, providing financial assistance immediately when disaster hits – including coronavirus. British Red Cross has already given £200,000 to support Asian countries severely affected by the pandemic.
