Overfinch Is Making Restomod Land Rover Defenders For The US Market

Land Rover expert Overfinch has announced its latest venture. Overfinch Heritage will take 25-year-old Defenders and modify them for the road.

The company is limiting itself to just 12 Heritage Defenders for 2021. It says that’s not just to keep the rarity up, but that it also reflects the amount of work going into each new vehicle.

Each restomod Defender comes with a new crate engine and transmission, as well as a number of modifications to enhance the driving experience. Plus, you’ll get Overfinch’s distinctive styling.

“Overfinch Heritage will address a major opportunity to satisfy the demand for restomod Land Rover vehicles in North America,” said Alex Sloane, VP Overfinch North America. “Remastering allows us to create enhancements and proprietary Overfinch upgrades that simply wouldn’t have featured in the classic production car.”

The process of modifying these Land Rovers has already begun with meticulously selected Defenders. Overfinch says that it will start to deliver them in April, but that if you have a Defender of your own that meets their requirements, they can modify that, too.

“We intend for our customers to create something truly personal, while guiding them to retain the classically British character of the original vehicle,” said Sloane. “Our pedigree, as the originator of after-market Range Rover tuning, can be traced back to 1975. We understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of these British icons.”

The history of the Defender is a bit twisty, but what we commonly call the Defender has been around since the early ’80s. Known simply as the Land Rover 90 or 110 at the start of its life, the arrival of the Discovery meant that it needed a model name.

The first “Defender” was produced in 1990 and it came with a variety of engines ranging from BMW I6s to Rover V8s to inline 4 turbodiesels. What engine Overfinch intends to put at the heart of its Heritage Defender has not been made explicit, though we imagine that Overfinch will work with customers to make their dreams come true.

Land Rover Defender 110 Masterfully Restored

Just look at it.

America is absolutely obsessed with Land Rovers, whether it be the ultra-luxurious Range Rover or the rough and ready Defender. The new Defender has been outselling the old model by a large margin, but Americans still have a soft spot for the original car, which is fetching insane prices, especially when restored and modified. Osprey Custom Cars is one builder that specializes in these cars with previous creations including a 600-horsepower supercharged Defender, and a 1986 Defender that is more luxurious than most BMWs. The company has now revealed its latest build, and it could possibly be the best one yet.

This custom Defender 110 has undergone a complete ground-up build, including a complete exterior and interior makeover, and even an engine swap. On the outside, this Landy is painted Keswick Green with a Santorini black roof, and features black anodized aluminum billet hinges on the doors, hood, fire and ice side steps, front and rear LED lights, and a tough-looking KBX front grille with black intake vents.

The redone body rolls on a brand new chassis with stock suspension, upgraded rebuilt axles with front and back disc brakes, and 20-inch Kahn rims wrapped in all-terrain tires.

Under the hood sits a 5.3-liter LS V8 engine that sends 325 hp to the wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Moving to the interior, this 110 now feels like a premium SUV from any of the major German manufacturers, and features a TDCI ‘Puma” style dashboard, aluminum door trimming, black Autobiography seating with front heated seats, and even an Alcantara headliner. Creature comforts include front and rear air conditioning, cruise control, and a custom center console with phone charging ports. The infotainment system is an Alpine double din stereo with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay integration and JL speakers. The car has received further refinements in the form of heavy duty sound deadening material for a quiet ride.

Not only is this Land Rover Defender 110 classy, but its supremely capable off road. The perfect combination.

Osprey’s Land Rover Defender 90 Has Classic Looks, Modern Power

If anything, Osprey Custom Cars’ custom builds are some of the best money can buy.

Despite looking like a well-preserved classic Land Rover Defender 90, this one was built from the ground up. It sports a modern chassis with suspension and brake upgrades, skid plates, steel bumpers and Kahn 18-inch alloy wheels shod in chunky off-road rubber.

Finished in Santorini Black, it features LED headlights and DRLs in the front bumper, a full-size spare at the back, a canvas soft top and a satin black powder-coated roll bar. There’s also a new front grille and a Puma-spec bonnet.

This Defender is powered by a 5.3-liter LS V8 that produces 325 horsepower and 330 pound-feet (447 Nm) of torque, driving all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission with transfer case.

Inside, there’s black leather upholstery, heated front seats, four inward-facing jump seats in the load area, air conditioning, 7-inch infotainment system from Alpine with Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, reversing camera, power windows, JL audio, LED ambient lighting, Momo steering wheel and a TDCI-spec dash with stock gauges.

Custom Defenders do not come cheap, though, and this Defender 90 will set you back almost $130,000. The new-gen model, on the other hand, starts from $46,100 in the U.S. – but we guess that’s comparing apples to oranges.

Supercharged 1993 Land Rover Defender Has A 600-HP Heart

It’ll make new Defender drivers envious.

From the outside, it looks like a pristine yet clearly older version of the Land Rover, but the SUV you see here is so much more than that. Some of our favorite restomods and custom cars are those which combine classic looks with modern underpinnings, and that’s exactly what Osprey Custom Cars have done with this 1993 Land Rover Defender 110. Osprey previously shoved a Corvette engine into a restored Defender 110, and the white example here also gets a notable power boost of its own.

Under the hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 with around 600 horsepower and 580 lb-ft of torque. The V8 is paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. The modifications beneath the skin didn’t end there, of course, as the Landy also boasts a heavy-duty transfer case, heavy-duty front/rear axles, and a galvanized chassis that has been powder-coated in gloss black. Along with MD Terra Firma springs and four-wheel power disc brakes, this Defender is ready to perform both on- and off-road. We wouldn’t want to risk scratching that paintwork, though.

Finished in Land Rover Alaskan White contrasted with a hood and roof in Stornoway Gray, it has a charmingly retro aura about it that can’t be matched by the brand new Defender. It’s just as appealing as Osprey’s 1986 Defender. The Cooper tires are wrapped around 18-inch Sterling rims in a two-tone black/silver combination.

Inside, there is far more luxury on offer than you would have gotten in an original 1993 Defender. There are classy Charcoal leather seats, with both front chairs being heated, along with an Alcantara headliner in the same color.

A seven-inch touchscreen interface brings this Landy in line with other modern SUVs, as does the wireless charging pad and dual USB charging ports. All of that isn’t even an exhaustive list of all the extras that this Defender comes with.

“This truck looks great at the country club or off-road,” said Aaron Richardet, the founder and managing director of Osprey. “It will surprise a lot [of] sports car drivers from a stoplight.”

It’ll surprise your financial manager, too, because this epic Defender’s asking price is $229,950. You could buy more than four brand new Defenders for that price. Then again, there’s nothing else out there quite like Osprey’s creation.

Land Rover Defender Upgraded With 650-HP Camaro ZL1 Engine

0-62 mph in this custom off-roader takes just 5.9 seconds.

Florida-based ECD Automotive Design produces some of the best handcrafted Land Rover Defender rebuilds on the market. Back in the summer, the US specialist teamed up with Electric Classic Cars to build the first Tesla-powered Land Rover in the world. Now, ECD has unveiled its latest Defender project, boasting unique styling and higher performance.

Dubbed Project Langeti, the custom Land Rover Defender is finished in utilitarian Keswick Green with Nara Bronze accents. This camo coloring makes the custom off-roader look far more rugged than the new Land Rover Defender. Its performance is also on another level.

Under the hood, you’ll find a supercharged LT4 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission – the same engine that powers the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 producing 650 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. This enables the custom off-roader to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 5.9 seconds, giving the Defender sports car levels of performance. Upgraded Brembo brakes with custom Nara Bronze calipers also provide more substantial stopping power for the high-performance off-roader.

Other modifications include air ride suspension and 18-inch wheels also finished in Nara Bronze for a smoother ride. A Nara Bronze roof, rear ladder, and a sport exhaust system with black dual exhaust tips add to the utilitarian theme.

A Kahn Design bumper, classic swing away wheel carrier, and mesh grille finished in Nara Bronze help Project Langeti stand out in the crowded Defender restomod scene. “Every detail has been considered on this build. Langeti is a truly stunning example of the new ECD Signature build range and I believe one of the best Defenders available worldwide,” said the company’s co-founder Tom Humble.

Inside, the interior matches the exterior color theme with chocolate brown leather applied to the front Recaro Orthoped seats and throughout the cabin. Retro touches such as the simple stitch design, and wood-rim steering wheel combine with modern upgrades such as a new sound system, back-up camera, blind-spot assistance, keyless entry, and power locks and windows.
